The numbers are terrifying and the fears are growing as more and more young men and women are being taken and used as pawns in a terrible crime. It’s known as human trafficking, and it accounts for almost $32 billion a year in profits that are illegally obtained through this horrible criminal enterprise that takes lives and hurts children. Human trafficking is a form of modern slavery that profits from exploitation of minors and more. Pimps will take minors and more with the intent of obtaining forced labor services out of them while simultaneously violating pimping and pandering laws, pornography laws, and laws against extortion and blackmail.
California is well aware of the problem because they see it firsthand, especially in some of the large cities like San Francisco where the issue is getting out of hand. During the last six months of 2014, an alarming 300 victims were involved in human trafficking, a trade that is unfortunately growing a little more each year as criminals realize they can profit from using other people in the most heinous of ways. San Francisco actually ranks among one of the top places where human trafficking is seen, alongside Los Angeles, Sacramento, and San Diego. One of the most astounding facts is that more and more children are becoming involved in these crimes each year. These are children who are being used for sexual acts just for the sake of money.
Many people in California believe that the best way to curb human trafficking spot on is to speak to the victims and survivors of these awful crimes and find out how the acts can be prevented. Reports have shown that 224 young survivors were females and many of these cases involved domestic workers working for cleaning crews for hotels and so much more. 118 of these minors were under the age of 18, including 12 who were 13 years or younger. 37% of these victims were black. The pimps involved in these crimes tend to take advantage of minorities, praying that they succumb every year.
Penalties For These Crimes
There are many ways in which this crime can take place by a defendant. For instance, a defendant may consider himself a pimp and hire many underage prostitutes under his wing. When they fight to get out of the business, he may threaten to kill their entire family or even steal money from them that they made through their work. Another example may be an owner of a factor hiring illegal immigrants and providing housing to the immigrants but stealing their pay. They may threaten the immigrants with immigration authorities if they try to stop working for them. Unfortunately, these are some of the common cases discovered in the world of human trafficking each and every year, and it must be abolished.
Under California law, if you have been involved in a human trafficking case, you will always receive a felony. This means that you could face anywhere from five, eight, or twelve years in California state prison as well as a fine of up to five hundred thousand dollars! You may also have to register as a sex offender for the rest of your life if you have been convicted in human trafficking dealing with minors.
